Pass the A2 license practical: tips to get it on your first try

Everything you need to know to prepare for and pass the A2 motorcycle license

If you want to ride a motorcycle with more than 125 cc, you'll need the A2 motorcycle license. This permit is the gateway to mid-displacement motorcycles. It'll allow you to ride models up to 35 kW (47 hp) and with a maximum power-to-weight ratio of 0.2 kW/kg.

If you have doubts about which motorcycle meets the A2 license standard, divide its power in kW by its curb weight. The result must be equal to or less than 0.2. For example, with 35 kW (47 hp), you'll need at least 386 lbs. (175 kg) to stay within the limit.

Since its implementation on December 9, 2009, the A2 is mandatory for any motorcycle exceeding 125 cc. You can obtain it from the age of 18.

Exception made, of course, for those tricycles like Piaggio MP3, which legally aren't motorcycles.

In this report, we're going to give you practical tips to pass the A2 license, both for the closed circuit part and for riding in real traffic. If you follow these recommendations and rely on some classes, you'll greatly increase your chances of getting it on your first try.

Depending on your previous license, you'll have more or fewer exams. The process to get the A2 motorcycle license depends on which permits you already have.

If you have a car license (B), you won't need to take the common theory exam. However, you will need to take the specific motorcycle theory and both practical exams.

If you have an A1 license, you skip the specific theory and the practical maneuvering exam. That way, you only have to take the open traffic test.

In any case, these aren't impossible tests. The secret is in preparation, listening to your instructor, and practicing enough.

Specific theory exam: the basis for starting

This exam is the same for both the A1 and A2 licenses. If you already have the A1, you won't have to repeat it.

It consists of a 20-question test about riding, regulations, basic mechanics, and motorcycle safety. Only two mistakes are allowed.

To pass it:

Study the manual and memorize key data such as braking distances or maximum speeds.

Take many online tests, including those offered by the DGT itself. The more you take, the more confident you'll be on exam day.

Control your nerves. Anxiety is one of the main enemies, so face the test calmly. If you fail, you'll always have another chance.

Practical maneuvering exam: the most daunting one

For many candidates, the A2 license maneuvering exam is the most feared part. Only those who don't already have the A1 must take it.

It's done on a closed circuit and, although the exercises aren't very "realistic" compared to daily riding, they require precision and control.

The test consists of two parts:

A slow part, where you start from a mark, go through two parallel lines without touching them, and weave between five cones, accelerate, and perform a controlled stop.

The fast part consists of a 295 ft. (90 m) section. All this must be completed in less than 25 seconds.

It consists of a start, quick zigzag after 131 ft. (40 m), a U-turn, and a new acceleration of 180 ft. (55 m). Then you must avoid an obstacle and stop within 39 ft. (12 m).

This exam is always done with a motorcycle of the type authorized by the permit.

There's a limited license variant if you take the test with an automatic scooter, which only authorizes you to ride that type of transmission. However, it's most advisable to get the full A2 to have freedom of choice.

The key in this part is listening to your instructor's directions. They know the circuit's tricks and can give you very specific tips to avoid silly mistakes. These tips help a lot to achieve the goal.

Practical traffic exam: the final stage

The A2 license traffic test is the final step before getting your permit. For many, it's the easiest part, but you shouldn't get overconfident.

Before heading out, the examiner may ask you to show how to check the oil level or brake fluid. Or to properly turn on the lights. It's not usual, but they can do it.

After that, you'll go out on public roads with a helmet, intercom, and the appropriate motorcycle. The examiner will follow you from a car and give you instructions by radio.

Here, they assess whether you ride safely and comply with the regulations. This means:

Keep the appropriate speed: if the road allows 50 mph (80 km/h), ride at that speed, not at 31 mph (50 km/h).

Respect signs and priorities: when stopping at a STOP or yield, make a clear head turn. That way, you'll show that you look both ways.

Avoid abrupt maneuvers: no unnecessary hard braking or aggressive turns.

Keep calm in unexpected situations: if another vehicle makes a mistake, don't get into arguments or lose focus.

Ultimately, the examiner wants to check that you control the motorcycle and know how to coexist with real traffic safely.

Keys to passing the A2 license on the first try

Take enough practical classes. Even if you already know how to ride, the maneuvers and exam protocols have particularities that are best practiced with a professional.

Listen to and apply your instructor's corrections because many times a small gesture or habit can make the difference.

Keep in mind that nerves can ruin a maneuver you've done well dozens of times.

Simulate exam conditions, always trying to practice with the same motorcycle and, of course, in an environment similar to the DGT circuit.
